Detectives are investigating whether a Centereach man arrested Friday in connection with child sex crimes more than three decades ago in Massachusetts has committed similar acts in Suffolk County, police said Monday.

Paul Collins, 62, who has lived in Suffolk County for nearly 10 years, was arrested on a warrant Friday at his Pleasant Avenue home by Suffolk police, along with Arlington, Mass., police and the U.S. Marshal's New York/New Jersey Regional Task Force, authorities said.

He is charged with indecent assault, battery of a child under 14, rape of a child by force, and open and gross lewdness, Suffolk County police said.

Collins was arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip and then taken to Massachusetts.

He met his victims, four males, through his involvement as swim coach and aquatics director with the Arlington Boys & Girls Club between 1978 and 1980, Suffolk police said.

Further details were not immediately available.

Suffolk police detectives are investigating Collins and are asking anyone with information about him and possible victims to call the Special Victims Section at 631-852-6184 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
