Suffolk health department advises against swimming at 49 beaches

Based on the potential for higher levels of bacteria following Thursday's heavy rain, an advisory against bathing has been issued for 49 Suffolk County beaches, health officials said.

The advisory will be lifted Friday at 11 a.m., unless sampling finds an elevated bacterial level, officials said.

Affected are 22 beaches in the Town of Brookhaven, 22 in Huntington and five in Smithtown, according to the Suffolk County health department.

Those beaches are in areas "heavily influenced by storm water runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries," meaning they "experience limited tidal flushing," officials said.
