Suffolk override vote hires 200 police, 80 in correction
Defying County Executive Steve Levy's veto, Suffolk legislators voted Tuesday night to hire 200 police officers and 80 correction officers in 2010.
The votes, passed 16-1, will increase county property taxes 3 percent in the police district. Lawmakers said the police officers are sorely needed.
