Suspect in stolen car leads police on chase
Police are searching for a man who, after a brief pursuit near Stony Brook Southampton Campus on Thursday night, jumped from a stolen car -- fleeing on foot as the vehicle crashed into a creek, authorities said.
Southampton Town police said the car had been reported stolen from Union Street in Hampton Bays at 8:22 p.m.
A short time later, police said, Stony Brook University police officers, on patrol on Montauk Highway near the Southampton campus, spotted the vehicle -- and attempted to begin a traffic stop. Instead, police said, the suspect led the officers on a brief pursuit, before jumping from the car, while it was still moving, near the intersection of Middle Pond Road and Dellaria Avenue.
Police said the suspect, described as being in his late teens or early 20s, ran off as the car crashed through a fence before plowing into a mooring anchor post in the creek.
