The name of the driver has not been released, pending positive identification by the Suffolk County medical examiner's office, Riverhead Town police said. Police said the fatal accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m.

The northbound truck, a 2011 Mack tractor-trailer, collided with the southbound 2008 Subaru driven by Reilly then crashed into "a large tree" on the east shoulder of the road, police said. Police said the force of the collision caused the truck to erupt in a fireball.

Emergency responders from the Riverhead Fire Department, Suffolk County police Aviation Unit and Riverhead police were at the scene, as were investigators from the Riverhead Fire Marshal's Office, Riverhead Highway Department, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Suffolk police Motor Carrier Division.

The Subaru was impounded for a safety inspection, police said. Police said the cause of the crash is not known and that the investigation is continuing.
