A car carrier hauling Sandy-damaged vehicles from Speonk to Calverton on the Long Island Expressway struck the overpass at Wading River Road about 5 p.m. Friday, Suffolk police said.

A passing motorist called 911, police said, and the truck's driver, Bryan Williams, 51, of Williamsport, Pa., was issued two tickets -- one for being over height, and one for having three bald tires.

Police said Williams had an SUV on the top level of the truck, which is what struck the overpass. The SUV didn't fall off in the collision, police said.

There was no major damage to the bridge or the expressway, police said, but the Department of Transportation will investigate further. They said traffic had resumed normally a few hours later.

Police said Williams is the owner and operator of the truck, and that his vehicle was placed out of service until he replaces the balding tires.
