A hit-and-run driver killed a pedestrian in West Babylon early Sunday, Suffolk County police said.

The accident occurred about 1:42 a.m. on westbound Sunrise Highway, about 500 feet west of Jerome Avenue.

A passing motorist told police he saw a woman leaning against the center median, and turned around to check on her. By then, others had stopped where Jennifer Wheeler, 30, of North Lindenhurst, was lying in the left lane, dead, police said.

Wheeler was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the county medical examiner's office.

First Squad detectives believe the woman was struck by a vehicle that left the scene. They are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the crash call 631-854-8152 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
