A man lost two fingers on his right hand and damaged two others late Thursday after lighting “mortar” fireworks in Wyandanch, Suffolk County police said.

Police did not release the name of the man, 35, of Brentwood, who along with others was setting off fireworks in front of an auto repair shop on Wyandanch Avenue at about 10 p.m., police said.

The device, also known as an artillery shell kit, detonated in his hand, severing two of his fingers, partially severing another and injuring one, police said.

The man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip by Wyandanch Rescue, police said.
