What’s the best way to demonstrate the dangers of fireworks? How about stuffing a car and a watermelon with M-80s and blowing them up? That’s what Suffolk County police plan to do today at a 12:30 p.m. press conferenceat the Suffolk Firematic Training Center in Yaphank (no, you can't come).

The event is an effort to raise public awareness of the hazards associated with illegal fireworks. Suffolk also wants to encourage people to attend authorized public displays, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy said in a press release.

““Illegal fireworks pose serious danger to the people who handle them and to any innocent bystanders should something go awry,” Levy said. “We want our residents to enjoy a happy, and safe, July Fourth weekend.”
