With the action winding down, Whittle says he's "very impressed by these worker bees. This house is starting to look house-like. "

As crews worked furiously Wednesday, Maria Bacchi, of Setauket, who nominated the Lutz family for the show, said this morning at the site that she’s “on such a high.”

“The process took about a year to do, so to be here almost to the day, to see all this happening, it almost feels like it’s not happening, even though I’m seeing it with my own eyes.”

The first day of free entry for "Extreme Makeover" spectators attracted a growing crowd to East Setauket, where construction crews were in the early stages of building the new Lutz house.

The air was alive with buzzing saws and rumbling cranes as blue-shirted workers assembled the new house.

Armed with sunscreen and bottled water, a few dozen spectators, shuttled to the site by bus, were lined up behind a barricade.

The carnival-like scene included massage therapists, a kid's tent with games and a radio station pumping music.

The work on Ringneck Lane is expected to continue around the clock until midday Saturday, when the work is expected to be finished.
