CLIMB THE TOWER
Maybe you’ve seen the Fire Island Lighthouse by day, but how about at sunset? The tower will stay open late -- until 8 p.m. -- every Friday in July. That’s perfect timing to make the climb up to the observation deck to see the sunset. Fire Island Lighthouse
The Fire Island Lighthouse, completed in 1858, is run by the nonprofit Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society for the U.S. Park Service. Its two intense 1,000-watt bulbs rotate and flash beams in 71/2-second intervals, to distances of more than 20 miles out to sea and across the Great South Bay.
