The conference, which will be held at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., will feature a scientific review of methods to prevent the river, which largely cuts through the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley, from falling into the same pollution-plagued rut as the nearby Forge River in Mastic.

“The Carmans is in pretty good shape. We want to keep it that way,” said Brookhaven Councilwoman Connie Kepert, who represents the district in which much of the river is situated.
