Today it's part of the Southampton library grounds, including an area where the library holds book sales. But two centuries ago, Cooper Hall was the home of famous whaler Captain Mercator Cooper, whose accomplishments include being the first sailor to set foot on the Antarctic. He did so in 1852, according to the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts. Cooper died in 1872.(Credit: David Reich-Hale )
