Annual 10K run will close roads in downtown Huntington area
Motorist beware Saturday morning. The Kiwanis Big 8 10K and 5K Sunrise Run and 5K Walk is scheduled in downtown Huntington between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m.
The Suffolk County Police Department’s Second Precinct is advising motorists to take alternate routes because roads in the downtown area are subject to closure.
The races begin and end at Huntington Town Hall, 100 Main St. This is the third annual 10K run and the first ever 5K run and 5K walk. Proceeds from the two runs will benefit local needy children and veteran’s groups.
The proceeds raised from the 5K walk will go toward Kiwanis International’s Eliminate Project, an effort to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus in Third World countries.
“We’re looking for support from our Huntington residents to raise funds for our kids and whether our kids are 6,7 or 8 or 19 coming home from the wars, we like to be there for them,” Barry Turk, former president of the Huntington Kiwanis, said. “And kids in need all over the world are also what we are about and with the 5K walk here’s an opportunity for our town to participate on a bigger scale.”
