Art contest to honor Sandy survivors
County Executive Edward Mangano is inviting Nassau artists to take part in an open art competition for a permanent tribute to the spirit of all county residents who endured superstorm Sandy’s wrath.
“Every crisis provides all of us with the ability to call upon our inner strength to begin the job of recovery,” he said. “I invite residents to create and submit a work of art that captures the resilience of Nassau County’s storm survivors, the role of our first responders and our county’s commitment to rebuilding.”
Winners will split nearly $20,000 donated by Lawrence and Susan Kadish, an Old Westbury couple who were not present at a news conference Friday. First place is $10,000, with $5,000 for 2nd place, $2,500 for 3rd and $1,000 each for two honorable mentions.
Judges for the contest are to be selected by Mangano. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 1. For complete information on submission rules, go to www.nassaucountyny.gov or call 516-571-6000. Accepted art work will be displayed at Nassau’s Office of Emergency Management.
Standing on the steps of county hall in Mineola, Mangano pointed to a nearby pickup truck with boardwalk planks from the Sandy-devasted City of Long Beach and said those who want to use a piece of that wood in their art should call 516-571-6000.
