The Asharoken board of trustees passed a resolution to exceed the state tax levy cap as it prepares next year’s budget.

“The purpose of this is to have the flexibility to do what’s right for the village,” Mayor Gregory Letica said. “It doesn’t mean that we are going to do it.”

The board voted 4-0 with one abstention to pierce the cap for next year’s budget, if necessary.

State law requires municipalities to hold a vote if they want to exceed the cap before approving a budget with such an increase.

The proposed budget for 2013-14 will be available for viewing before the board’s next meeting on March 5. There will be a public hearing on the proposed budget at the meeting.
