Atlantic Beach Bridge to resume tolls
The Nassau County Bridge Authority will begin toll collection on the Atlantic Beach Bridge on Monday at 10 a.m., after a nearly three-week suspension, officials said.
In anticipation of Sandy, the authority stopped collecting tolls at 10 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28 to help the evacuation of people living in affected areas, such as Atlantic Beach and Long Beach.
Electricity and the capability to collect tolls were restored to the bridge on Nov. 5, but members of the authority’s board of commissioners opted to continue the suspension until Monday because they recognized “the extreme hardship suffered by so many on the Barrier Island,” officials said in a statement.
Officials have also decided to suspend all transfer fees for the next six months. Decals from 2012 will be valid until Jan. 31, 2013. Decals from 2013 will become immediately valid and remain valid until Dec. 31, 2013.
Those who have purchased a 2012 decal, but have lost use of their car, will be given one 20-trip card to cross the bridge for free until they can purchase a 2013 decal, which will be available beginning Monday at the administrative building, on the south end of Rte. 878 in Lawrence.
