Authors to raise money for breast cancer

Linda Maria Frank had two missions on her mind. As a survivor of two bouts with breast cancer, leading her to get a double mastectomy in 2008, she wanted to help other women battle the disease. She also wanted to raise awareness of works by local writers like herself.

On Sunday, both goals are going to be realized at the “Book Lover’s Garden Party.”

The fundraiser/book fair will include 25 authors at Scarsella’s Flowers, Greenhouse & Home in Laurel Hollow, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Proceeds from $30 author table fees, $20 entrance fees and a 10-percent take of book sales will benefit the Breast Cancer Surgical Mission, which has doctors and surgical staff visit Haiti and the Dominican Republic to provide breast cancer screenings and immediate surgical care.

Frank, a former science and forensics teacher who has written two self-published mystery novels for teenage girls and hosts a public access show on local authors, said she was motivated to publish on her own after the double mastectomy.

“Every day is a gift,” she said. “You don’t have any rights to go and pity yourself in the corner, because there’s lots and lots and lots of things to do out there.”

The authors who will attend the event include:

Ranya Malouf, “Blue Fish’s Secret Wish”
Eileen Lichtenstein, “Balance and Power Life Coaching”
