Baldwin goes 'Gangnam Style' at homecoming pep rally
Nyasia Elam Crossed her hands, pulsing them up and down, while dancing to South Korean entertainer Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” jumping up as if riding a horse.
The senior cheerleading captain joined other sports team captains at Baldwin Senior High School during a dance-off with the boys at the school’s homecoming pep rally on Friday.
“We all had so much fun dancing. It was crazy,” said Elam, 17. “It’s senior year for me and I’m so glad we did this.”

And they weren’t the only students performing for the rowdy crowd of 1,200 students. The school’s step team had students cheering and hanging on their every move.
Sophomore Xiana Flowers, 15, sat on top her cousin Symphoni Flowers’ shoulders, clapping her hands and slapping her chest with her cousin underneath stomping her feet. Both cheered “B-A-L-D-W-I-N” along with other members of the step team.
“We worked really hard to perfect this routine and we’re so happy with the way it turned out,” said junior Symphoni Flowers, 16. “The crowd went wild for us. I just can’t imagine a better rally than this. It’s really nice to see everyone come together for homecoming.”
After all the school’s teams were announced and the dance performances came to an end, the homecoming court and king and queen were announced.
Her body shaking in excitement, Kassandra Fernandez, 17, and football quarterback Tyler Warner, 17, were crowned king and queen. The crowd stood up to roar. Handed a scepter and bouquet of flowers, both took their place at their royal wooden thrones.
“I’ve been nominated every year of high school, but I was never crowned,” Fernandez said. “I was literally shaking when it was announced I won. I’ll remember this moment.”
