Baldwin meeting to focus on rebuilding
Hempstead Town officials will hold a town-hall meeting Thursday to help Baldwin and South Hempstead residents still struggling in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy.
Hempstead Senior Councilman Anthony Santino and members of the town’s building department will explain how the town has streamlined the building permitting process. The meeting will be held in Baldwin Middle School, 3211 Schreiber Pl., at 7:30 p.m.
“Though nearly a month has passed since Hurricane Sandy left a path of destruction in its wake, many town residents are still struggling to rebuild their homes and get back to their daily lives,” Santino said in a statement. “The Town of Hempstead has taken numerous steps to help homeowners along the difficult path to recovering from this powerful storm.”
The building department is waiving all permit fees for storm-related structural repairs and temporary housing trailers for residents of unincorporated areas who are seeking to rebuild or make repairs to storm-battered homes.
The town is also waiving building variance requirements for town residents who want to rebuild their homes at higher elevations to meet FEMA flood standards.
