Beautification funds to help downtown
A $380,000 beautification project in downtown Oceanside, including new walkways, has been unveiled by the Town of Hempstead.
The project was funded mostly from money secured by state Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre), according to a town news release; federal funds covered the rest of the cost.
Hempstead did not have to provide any funding for the project, town spokesman Mike Deery said.
Along with the walkways, the project includes brick paving stones, Victorian lighting and new trash cans on the west side of Long Beach Road, between Tilrose Avenue and Poole Street, the release said.
Deery said construction is nearly complete. All that’s left is the decorative lighting for the streetscape, and planting trees. Once the lights and trees are delivered, they can be installed immediately, he said.
The project is one of several to revamp Oceanside that have been spearheaded by Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino, the release said.
“Beautifying our downtowns is a welcome addition to our commercial areas for residents, business owners and shoppers,” Murray said in a statement. “This busy thoroughfare in Oceanside will certainly benefit from these enhancements.”
