'Behind the times,' Oyster Bay expands recycling program
The Town of Oyster Bay will expand its recycling program by placing containers at beaches and other public sites, town Supervisor John Venditto promised Tuesday.
Venditto made the pledge after Mindy Silberg of Jericho asked the town board to expand the program at the urging of her daughter. She said that Suffolk County and other governments around the country have recycling containers while Oyster Bay does not.
“The town is a little bit behind the times,” Silberg said.
“I don’t like to hear that,” Venditto told her. “You certainly got my attention.”
Silberg also suggested composting containers be placed around the town. Venditto said he was not opposed to that idea but it would take more study time while recycling pails could probably be placed immediately.
The town used to have recycling pails at beaches and other sites years ago but stopped that because people put garbage into them, officials said.
“I feel there needs to be more outreach” to get residents to understand the program and properly use the pails, Silberg said.
