Plans for a transit hub at the Bellport LIRR station got a jolt of funding last week, with a $44,500 grant awarded by a private group interested in transportation development in the New York region.

The grant, by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign and the One Region Funders’ Group, was one of four awarded to projects in the metro area. They were selected out of more than 40 applicants.

The grant is earmarked for a study to evaluate sites near the Long Island Rail Road station in Bellport for sewage treatment options. Building more sewers is essential to private redevelopment proposals to revitalize the village, according to One Region Funders’ Group, “through construction of residential units, commercial and office space, and a community center.”

Conducting the study is the first step toward the revitalization, proponents said.

“Sewage infrastructure will enable the town to move forward [with] a Transit Oriented Development  adjacent to the train station in North Bellport,” Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Connie Kepert, who represents the area, said in a statement. “It is a key investment which will spur growth, and create jobs in an area which has been underserved and impacted by blight for many years.”

Town Supervisor Mark Lesko said in a statement that “the community and town have a vision for stimulating economic growth in Bellport and this grant will assist with the vital first step of any redevelopment process -- determining feasible sewage treatment options for the area.”

The other three grants were awarded to projects in Flushing,  Mamaroneck, in Westchester County, and Norwalk, Conn.

This is the second year of the transit-centered development grant program. In 2009, the program awarded $25,000 to the Wyandanch Rising project and $25,000 to the Ronkonkoma Hub project. Both of those projects are still in the planning stages.
