Bideawee’s sixth annual Love Your Pet Art Contest & Expo in Westhampton calls on students in grades 1-8 to submit artwork expressing their love for animals by Feb. 1.

Amy Hraniotis, associate director of partnerships at Bideawee, an animal welfare and adoption organization with locations in Westhampton, Wantagh and Manhattan, said the contest encourages young artists to use their talents to express their love for animals. Last year, they received 450 submissions from Long Island students.

“Six years ago, we were trying to think of a fun way to incorporate the community and at the same time get families to come see the animals we have up for adoption,” she said. “It’s a great way to showcase the great work these kids do and their love for animals.”

Entries must be submitted by the end of the day on Feb. 1, and can represent any medium including drawings, photos, paintings and sculpture. Entries must be accompanied by an Artwork Entry Form, which can be downloaded at www.bideawee.org/loveyourpet.

The first 300 entries will be displayed for public viewing Feb. 7-14 at the Bideawee’s Art Expo. The display will be held at Bideawee’s adoption center in Westhampton, located at 118 Old Country Road.

The public can come into the center during the display dates from 3 to 5 p.m. or on weekends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bideawee charges $5 at the door to cast a vote.

“We use admission to help us care for animals in our adoption center, keeping them healthy and fed and loved. Last year, we raised $1,000,” Hraniotis said. “These kids will be expressing their love for animals through art and find out how important adoption is.”

Prizes will be awarded in four age categories. The winners, to be announced on Bideawee’s Facebook page on Feb. 15, will receive prizes from Splish Splash, Tanger Outlets and Dave & Busters. The four winners will be entered into Bideawee’s Facebook contest. The student receiving the most likes to a picture posted of their artwork will win the grand prize — a $100 Target gift card.

Submissions can be mailed or dropped off at the adoption center between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. For more information, email Amy Hraniotis at amy.hraniotis@bideawee.org.
