Billy Crystal to reveal donation to Long Beach

Billy Crystal: "No matter where you were you

Comedian-actor Billy Crystal will be in Long Beach on Saturday to announce a donation to the city, city officials said.

Long Beach officials would not confirm the amount of the donation but said Crystal would make the announcement at noon while standing on a finished portion of the new boardwalk at the end Long Beach Boulevard.

The boardwalk is undergoing a $44.2 million reconstruction after the old one was destroyed by superstorm Sandy.

Crystal, whose family moved to Long Beach when he was a toddler in 1951, often has spoken fondly about his years growing up in the city. In his book “700 Sundays,” he wrote that the boardwalk contributed to the city’s image as “a sort of Atlantic City without the saltwater taffy and the diving horse” and recalled fondly its batting cage and games of chance.

A Crystal representative said Thursday she had no information about Saturday’s event.
