Biodegradable lawn, leaf bags offered in North Hempstead

North Hempstead residents can pick up discounted biodegradable lawn and leaf bags for their excess fall foliage, under an environmental initiative by the town.

The paper bags allow for yard waste to be composted right in the bags — a difficult feat if the waste is contained in plastic bags.

The bags cost $2 for a package of five and can be purchased at the Solid Waste Management Authority at 802 West Shore Rd. in Port Washington. They can also be bought at the Aquatic Activity Center at Michael J. Tully Park, 1801 Evergreen Ave., New Hyde Park.

The bags, filled only with grass and leaves, can be left at the curb on regular collection days, according to the town.
