Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine gets new chief of staff
The chief of staff to Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward P. Romaine resigned Wednesday, citing a desire to return to his private law practice, Romaine said.
Garrett Swenson, a former Southampton Town attorney who was hand-picked by Romaine in December to serve as his chief of staff, had told Romaine he wanted to leave the position and submitted his letter of resignation at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Romaine said the departure was amicable and that Swenson will periodically consult on legal matters for the town.
“I am a fan of Garrett Swenson,” Romaine said Thursday. “I think he’s one of the finest municipal attorneys I’ve come across. I appreciate his service and I appreciate that he will continue to work for us from time to time.”
Swenson did not return a call for comment.
Romaine’s new chief of staff will be Ed Morris, the town’s parks commissioner.
Morris “will be doing double duty as parks commissioner and chief of staff,” Romaine said. “He has a second title, and some additional money but less than Garrett.” He added that the town will save money by not hiring a separate chief of staff.
Morris will earn $40,000 for his chief of staff title, on top of his $105,000 parks commissioner salary. Swenson’s salary was not immediately available, but according to 2011 town payroll data the chief of staff to the supervisor earned a base pay of $107,000.
Morris did not return a call for comment.
