Businesses, public to meet with Hempstead Village developers
Local business owners will have a chance to meet Thursday with the developers of Hempstead Village’s $2 billion plan to revitalize its downtown.
Master developer Renaissance Downtowns, along with UrbanAmerica Advisors, is hosting three meetings for business owners about opportunities in the downtown redevelopment project — a combination of housing options, hotels, shops, open space, parking and entertainment.
Business development expert Kennedy Smith, of the Arlington, Va.-based CLUE Group, will lead the appointment-only sessions scheduled for noon, 2 and 4 p.m. Time slots are still available for the meetings, which will be held in the developers’ information booth at the Hempstead Transit Center parking lot, at Main and West Columbia streets.
Property and business owners said they worried about potential displacement of small businesses, temporary closures of stores, safety issues and empty storefronts. Others have said they want the community benefits agreement being negotiated with the project’s developer to incorporate contracts for local businesses and jobs for village residents.
A portion of the 3,500 permanent and 10,000 construction jobs expected to be created by the project will go to local residents, village officials and the developers have said.
There will also be a public meeting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the community room of the Hempstead Public Library, 115 Nichols Ct. The developers will review feasibility studies they has conducted in response to ideas posted on the Renew Hempstead website.
