Casserly sets goals for Amityville mayoral campaign
Amityville Deputy Mayor Peter Casserly opened his mayoral campaign Tuesday night with a sketch of policy priorities: storm recovery, budget management, road repair and the appointment of the first woman trustee in the village’s history.
Casserly, a 30-year village trustee and former Babylon town employee who now works as director of government affairs for Winters Brothers garbage company, spoke briefly at a fundraiser at Vero, a restaurant on Broadway.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Babylon town Supervisor Rich Schaffer introduced him, with Bellone promising “great things ahead” for the village under Casserly.
Also present were Amityville Mayor Peter Imbert, who has said he will not run again, and trustees Dennis Siry and Richard Imbert, who also has said he will step down at the end of his term.
Absent was Edward C. Johnson, a trustee since 1997 who has said he will run for the mayor’s seat in the March election and has a campaign kickoff of his own scheduled for Sunday.
Casserly said the fundraiser, which featured an open bar, netted $15,000. About 110 people signed nominating petitions for Casserly. One hundred signatures are needed to get onto the ballot.
