Celebration of black community in Town of Hempstead

The Hempstead Town board will host a special ceremony Tuesday honoring the contributions of the black community to neighborhoods and the town. The event is part of the town’s African-American History Month observance.

The free event, titled “Rebuilding Together,” will be held at Hempstead Town Hall, 1 Washington St., at 3 p.m.

The program will include remarks from the Rev. Floyd H. Flake, pastor of the Greater Allen AME Cathedral of New York in Jamaica, Queens, town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby.

Chris Arcenaux, founder of the nonprofit Darby Foundation that runs an after-school golfing program in Uniondale, will accept the Rosa Parks Award.

Town employees who have 25 years or more of public service will also be presented with appreciation awards.
