Coast Guard allows 'explosive' celebration in Patchogue

The U.S. Coast Guard will allow a wedding party in Patchogue to stage an "explosive" celebration away from the altar.

The Coast Guard confirmed last week it will establish a temporary safety zone for “the DeStefano family wedding fireworks display” by blocking an area with a 1,000-foot radius in navigable Patchogue Bay.

“This action is necessary to provide for the safety of life on navigable waters,” Coast Guard officials said in a statement.

The safety zone, just south of Lombardi’s On the Bay restaurant, will be in effect from 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 until 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 4, the Coast Guard said.

Entering the area during that time is prohibited unless authorized, officials said.

Coast Guard officials had previously announced the DeStefano family had applied for closing part of the bay for a wedding.

The request for public comment period was held by the Coast Guard in September.

Village Mayor Paul Pontieri has said he has no objection to the plan, “as long as it’s a small fireworks display.” The family planning the wedding has not been fully identified.

Officials say they try to establish a safety zone any time there is an event such as fireworks.
If the show is canceled for any reason, it could be rescheduled for the same time the following day, Coast Guard officials said.

Officials said anyone can fill out a marina event application for events such as a fireworks display as long as they provide specific details.
