Community violence forum to be held in Hempstead Village
Hempstead Village officials will hold a community forum today to bring residents together to discuss bringing an end to neighborhood violence and talk about other issues.
The forum, presented by Mayor Wayne J. Hall Sr. and the board of trustees, will be held in the Hempstead Public Library community room, 115 Nichols Ct., from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Residents will be able to share concerns and ask questions.
The village of 54,000 has one of Long Island’s highest crime rates. That’s why residents, community activists and local officials have raised concerns about shootings and homicides.
On Sept. 11, Dante James Quinones-Wright, 17, was fatally shot on Dartmouth Street in Hempstead. Pedro Merchant, 20, of North Valley Stream, was arrested Thursday. He was charged with one count of second-degree murder.
In July, 24-year-old Blair M. Kearse was fatally shot and a second victim was shot and injured on Linden Place. Several shots were fired and detected by ShotSpotter, a gunshot sound-detection system launched in February to help police find the location of a shooting more quickly.
For more information about the forum, contact Deputy Mayor Waylyn Hobbs at 516-448-4614.
