Consultants to bid on Smithtown industrial study
The Town of Smithtown is seeking a consultant to study a section of Kings Park dominated by an industrial storage facility that has run afoul of state environmental authorities.
The consultant would assess the area around Lawrence Road, about 2 miles east of Sunken Meadow Parkway, and recommend potential uses for the neighborhood, Town Supervisor Patrick Vecchio said after a town board meeting Tuesday. The board set an Aug. 2 deadline for consultants to bid on a contract to conduct the study.
A 4.56-acre property at Lawrence and Old Northport roads has been cited by state environmental authorities for illegal mining and waste storage three times since 2002. A potential buyer of the parcel is seeking a zoning change that would permit legal storage facilities there. Town planning officials are seeking alternative uses for the property.
Vecchio could not estimate what the study would cost or how long it would take. “I don’t think it should take all that long,” he said.
He said the winning bid might be awarded by the town board at its Aug. 14 meeting.
