Contractor W H M Plumbing & Heating wins bid for $4M upgrade to Northport sewage plant
Northport Village has awarded a $3,392,000 contract to W H M Plumbing & Heating Contractors Inc. as part of the village’s planned sewage treatment plant upgrades.
Administrator Gene Guido said the East Setauket company was awarded the general construction bid. Guido said a contract will now be drawn up and signed by both parties.
The $4 million upgrade includes two additions, housing denitrification and pH equipment.
Northport must reduce its nitrogen emissions from the plant from 18.5 pounds per day to 10 pounds per day by August 2014 — a mandate being overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Village officials have asked for more time because of the plan’s modifications.
Environmental experts and local officials say the upgrade will help keep the harbor clean and could mitigate red tide, a harmful algae bloom that has caused numerous shellfish closures in Northport Bay, Huntington Bay and surrounding waters since it was discovered in 2006.
