Cops donate cash to mend mutilated puppy Miss Harper

Donations from the community and Nassau PBA will provide lifetime care to a pit bull rescued by the Nassau SPCA named “Miss Harper.” The pit bull was found with missing ears and a leg. Videojournalist: Chris Ware (Jan. 31, 2014)

The Nassau County Police Benevolent Association on Friday said it will donate as much as $5,000 to cover the medical care of Miss Harper, a 7-month-old pit bull puppy found with its ears and hind right leg cut off last September.

After picking Miss Harper up from an emergency veterinary center in Nassau County on Sept. 3, Bob Sowers, a detective with the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, brought her to My Pet’s Vet in Huntington, where a news conference to announce the donation was held.

At My Pet’s Vet, the dog was immediately treated for infections, but she will require additional medical treatment including surgery to open up her ears, which are closed over, and be fitted for a prosthetic leg, Sowers said.

"Hopefully, in the near future the people responsible will be brought forth... and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law so the public can see the type of things people are doing and we can stop this from happening in the future," Sowers said.

No updates were available on the investigation, which is being conducted by the Nassau SPCA and the New York State attorney general’s office.

Miss Harper will be available for adoption following her care. While there’s no set date for her to be released, interest in giving her a forever home has already been brisk.

"We've already received hundreds of calls to adopt her, but we want someone with extensive. experience with the breed and someone who lives on Long Island," Sowers said.

Interested applicants can email adopt@ncspca.us, and information on donating to Miss Harper’s care can be found at nassaucountyspca.org/MissHarper.cfm.
