Country star Rodney Atkins to do free show at MacArthur Airport
Visitors passing through Long Island MacArthur Airport on Tuesday may catch a concert to go with their flights.
Radio station My Country 96.1 and PenAir airline are bringing country crooner Rodney Atkins to perform at noon in MacArthur’s atrium, in what the airport is billing as its first concert. The show is free.
The Tennessee native has six No. 1 hits, including “Take a Back Road” and “Farmer’s Daughter.”
The concert is touted as the first of many live music shows to highlight radio broadcasting company JVC’s new partnership with Islip and the airport.
In a news release, station officials said the partnership was just getting started. “This is only the beginning of our Airport Atrium lineup,” Phathead, program director for My Country 96.1, said.
In August, JVC announced it will open a satellite studio at the airport as part of the radio company’s expansion. JVC is planning to run a 24-hour radio station in an empty baggage services office in the airport’s main terminal.
MacArthur officials have tried to turn around the fortunes of the struggling airport with the recent addition of two airlines -- PenAir is one -- and new retail and film and TV shoots, in addition to the radio studio.
Town Councilman John Cochrane, town liaison to the airport, said in the release, “This is exactly how we envision promoting Long Island MacArthur Airport."
