After being rescued from a shelter in Manhattan two years ago and placed with a loving owner, a 3-year-old Staffordshire terrier/bulldog mix is in limbo once again and waiting in Medford for a new forever home.

Selene was once on the euthanasia list at Animal Care & Control Shelter of NYC in 2011 until Manhattan-based nonprofits Zani’s Furry Friends pet rescue and Urgent Death Row Dogs stepped in, according to Vallie Koren, adoption coordinator at Zani’s Furry Friends.

Soon after, the groups adopted her out to Joe Ouellette III, of Leominster, Mass., who died in his sleep on Sept. 16 at the age of 31, leaving Selene on her own.

“She had a great life. No man or person could have loved that dog as much as he loved her,” Koren said. “But about two weeks ago, there was a post on his Facebook page from his sister saying that he had passed away, so we coordinated a pickup.”

Selene’s trainer, Ian Martin of Absolute K9 in Lunenburg, Mass., took her in until Zani’s Furry Friends picked her up last Saturday. Now, she’s staying at Canine Counsel Dog Training in Medford and being trained until she finds a new home.

“It was only Selene and Joe. Given that her life was so secluded she hasn't been exposed to much,” Koren said. “We're trying to get her back into a home. She's an amazing dog and so loyal and loving. A people-pleaser. She really needs a home.”

You can donate to her care and training here. If interested in adoption or foster care, email Koren at dogs@zanisfurryfriends.org.
