All things essential to celebrating and preserving Mother Nature will be explored in Huntington Town Saturday at the Family Earth Day Expo, a celebration of Earth Day.

“Children and parents alike will definitely have the opportunity for a lot of hands-on fun at this event,” said town board member Mark Cuthbertson, who is hosting the event along with town Supervisor Frank P. Petrone.

The celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Town Hall, 100 Main St.

Residents and businesses will have the opportunity to dispose of electronic waste such as cellphones, pagers, radios, stereos, computers, laptops, fax machines and televisions at an e-recycling drop off. There will also be a rechargeable battery collection station.

Residents also are encouraged to bring unwanted documents to shred at a disposal event.
Green demonstrations will include using residential solar energy, organic gardening and activities for children, including a lesson on how compost is made and how to plant a seed in a recycled pot.

To demonstrate the importance of protecting the marine environment, Cornell University Cooperative Extension Service representatives will offer the opportunity to experience a variety of sea creatures in their marine life touch tank.

Other activities include an interactive display of a fire truck, rescue vehicles and a garbage truck that attendees are encouraged to touch and sit in.

Boaters will be able to dispose of shrink-wrap at the event.
