Farmingdale State College will host an environmental sustainability conference March 22, featuring an expert on solar power and a panel on municipal policies promoting renewable energy.

The daylong event, “Renewables in Smart Grid Technology for a Sustainable Future,” is the college’s second International Energy and Sustainability Conference.

It will take place in Roosevelt Hall on the college’s main campus.

Keynote speaker Richard Perez, research professor at the University at Albany’s Atmospheric Sciences Research Center, will speak on “The Value of Solar: Does it Compute or Not?”

More than 30 vendors are expected to display their products and electric vehicles will be available for attendees to test drive during the event. Kamal Shahrabi, dean of Farmingdale’s School of Engineering Technology, is scheduled to present a Smart Grid demonstration, college officials said.

Representatives of various environmental groups and utility companies are to participate, including the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Renewable Energy Long Island and the Long Island Power Authority.

The standard registration fee is $75. Senior citizens, students and alumni receive a discounted rate of $25. Professional engineers and architects can receive professional development credits from the New York State Education Department.

A conference agenda and registration form is available online.
