Farmingdale State College has broken ground on a new, $26.7 million building that will house the college’s School of Business, officials announced.

The three-story, 42,000-square-foot structure will include faculty offices, classrooms and computer laboratories.

The new building is to be completed in October 2014. It will be LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, as required for all new buildings in the State University of New York system.

Funding for the building is part of a $185 million capital plan by the state, college officials said.

About 2,000 students are enrolled in business programs including business management, visual communications, ornamental horticulture, sport management and computer systems. More than 8,000 students are currently enrolled in the college.

The business school was designed by Urbahn Architects of Manhattan. It is being built by Stalco Construction, which has offices in Islandia and Manhattan.
