First Long Island kosher BBQ cook-off Sunday
Eighteen cooking teams from Long Island and as far away as Georgia will face off Sunday in the first Long Island Kosher BBQ Championship, hosted by Westbury’s Temple Beth Torah.
No pork is permitted in the contest, which features beef rib, baked beans and brisket events. A panel of 18 judges includes New York City barbecue chefs, Kansas City Barbecue Society-certified judges and Jeff Ossip, director of culinary services at the Glatt Kosher Atria Kew Gardens Senior Living community in Queens, among others.
A rabbi with kosher expertise will be on hand during preparation and cooking.
The winning team will receive a bid to any of the Kosher BBQ Championships in Atlanta, Birmingham or Memphis.
Guests can watch the action, play basketball or compete in pickle and hot dog eating contests.
Brisket sandwiches, hot dogs, knishes, coleslaw, fruit, ices and beverages will be sold.
Proceeds benefit Long Island hunger relief charities including Long Island Cares, the Interfaith Nutrition Network, Hatzilu, Rock Can Roll and M’yad l’yad.
The event begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. Temple Beth Torah is at 243 Cantiague Rock Rd. For more information, visit likosherbbq.org.
