Gas line OKd for Oyster Bay Cove estate
The installation of a natural gas line at the Littauer estate in Oyster Bay Cove will bring the sprawling 26-acre property one step closer toward becoming a town-run educational and recreational space called the Farm at Oyster Bay.
Oyster Bay Town Board members on Tuesday voted 6-0, with one councilman absent, to pay nearly $19,000 to National Grid to “bring gas to the house,” town spokeswoman Phyllis Barry said.
The gas line is part of the renovation of the estate, which dates to the 18th century and which the town bought in 2007 for $5.8 million, Barry said.
The purchase — which kept the land from being developed — included meadows, a house, barn and several other buildings including the caretaker’s house, Barry said. The caretaker herself still works on the property. Last owned by Mary Littauer, who died in 2005, the site was renamed the Farm at Oyster Bay.
It will be some time, Barry said, before the farm is open to the public for walking tours, bird-watching, agricultural education and other activities envisioned by advocates.
Among other tasks, the house must be brought up to modern standards that include disability access, Barry said.
