The renovation of a Babylon Town park is receiving a helping hand from the federal government.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has announced that he has secured $4.1 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development toward the revitalization of Geiger Lake Park, which straddles Wyandanch and Deer Park. The town is refurbishing the park as part of its $500 million public/private Wyandanch Rising redevelopment effort. Park plans include a spray park, new basketball courts, a new playground, a carousel, a conservatory and a botanical garden.
The town had previously mentioned the $4.1 million as part of its funding for the park revitalization — categorizing it as a Community Development Block Grant — but the process of obtaining it is now final, said a town spokesman.
The entire park redevelopment is expected to cost $11 million. In addition to the HUD money, the town has approved bonding for $5 million and is using $1.3 million in other grant money.
