The Kings Park branch of the Smithtown Special Library District will celebrate its grand reopening Friday at noon.

State Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) will be the keynote speaker. Also attending will be Assemb. Michael J. Fitzpatrick (R-St. James), Suffolk County Legis. Lynne Nowick (R-St. James), Smithtown Town Supervisor Patrick Vecchio and local civic group leaders.

The branch is one of three district libraries that underwent renovation and expansion — a fourth location was converted into a library from a state armory — after voters approved $21 million for the projects in 2008.

The Kings Park project, which began in April 2011, was completed last month. It added 3,000 square feet to the library and cost about $3 million, said Robert Lusak, the district’s library director.

Half of the additional square footage is dedicated to a new children’s room, decorated in a nautical theme with books, computers and DVDs, Lusak said.

“The library can better monitor who comes in and out of the room,” he said. “We want to make sure that people feel safe wherever they are in the library.”

The other half is for storage.

The renovation included new energy-efficient lighting, windows, an elevator, heating and air-conditioning unit, electrical systems and building compliance with the American with Disabilities Act.

There is a larger meeting room for library-sponsored and community programs, which “will accommodate larger attendance numbers,” Lusak said. The extra space also allowed for a new teen area with books, computers, tables and seating, as well as a new Blu-ray Disc collection.

The Smithtown Main Library Building will have its reopening event on Dec. 14 at noon.

“The library appreciates the patience that our community had while all this work was going on, because we do know that there were some inconveniences,” Lusak said. “But in the end, we encourage everyone to visit their library often and take advantage of all the resources that we have to offer.”
