The Great Neck Park District voted on Thursday to ban smoking at all park district facilities.

District commissioner Robert A. Lincoln Jr. said the resolution, which makes all park facilities smoke-free, originally came about at the request of some residents to ban smoking on the Village Green.

The district previously had banned smoking in some areas, such as playgrounds.

“As we discussed it, we felt it was worthy of consideration to make the park district completely smoke-free,” Lincoln said.

The ban will be enforced by park district employees, and signs informing parkgoers of the change will go up in about 30 days.

“We’ll have to give it a try,” commissioner Ruth J. Tamarin said. “It’s the right thing to do.”
