HBO hit 'Girls,' star Lena Dunham film in Greenport
Fourteen-year-old Charley Claudio spent her entire Tuesday morning sending pictures to Instagram.
But these weren’t just any ordinary pictures. They were of scenes from the hit HBO show "Girls" that filmed Tuesday in Greenport.
“This is exciting that they are filming in Greenport,” she said. “I get to brag to all my friends that I am here watching them film,” said the Mattituck teenager.
"Girls," which premiered on HBO in April 2012, was created by Lena Dunham, who plays Hannah Horvath, an aspiring writer whose parents cut her off financially. Dunham is also the film’s writer, director and executive producer. The show takes a humorous look at the various humiliations and rare triumphs of four women in their early 20s. The show is currently filming its third season, consisting of 12 episodes.
Greenport was chosen as a location for its beautiful scenery, according to ‘Girls’ Executive Producer Ileen Landress.
“Girls" director Jesse Peretz has a house in the area,” Landress explained of the filming, which was set to wrap Tuesday evening. “We decided it would be a great place to film and that’s why we wrote this beachfront episode.”
The scenes shot in Greenport Tuesday included the exterior of village favorites like Claudio’s Restaurant and Preston’s Nautical Gift Store. Interior filming was also done inside The Market Whole Foods, Supplements, & Cafe. The crew filmed interior scenes last week in Greenport outside public view.
“It’s about the girls shopping and running into their friends here in Greenport and going to the market to get dinner. We see the girls arriving and departing in Greenport,” said Landress of the episode, which will air next year.
Greenport’s Bill Claudio, Charley’s grandfather and owner of Claudio’s Restaurant and several other businesses in the marina area, was thrilled to have the film crew in Greenport.
“I love this. It promotes the village anytime there is activity like this,” Claudio said.
Claudio also was enthusiastic when Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford filmed in Greenport for 1997 flick "The Devil’s Own."
“Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford are very nice people,” he said.
As camera crews set up scenes along Main Street Tuesday, John Winkler, 63, and his wife Maritza, 62, stood and watched in amazement.
“We are thrilled to see all this excitement,” said Maritza Winkler. “This is a wow for me. Greenport is such a sweet village. We have been living here for seven years and we love it here. This has turned into a wonderful Tuesday morning here in Greenport.”
