Hearing on Kings Park rezoning likely to be delayed
Hearings on controversial plans to rezone dozens of industrial properties in Kings Park probably will be postponed to next year.
The proposals, which were to be heard Wednesday by the Town of Smithtown Planning Board, are expected to be adjourned. An attorney for the developers, Vincent Trimarco of Smithtown, asked the board to reschedule the hearings for February.
Trimarco has said the hearings would be postponed in deference to a study of the Kings Park industrial zone being prepared for the town by a consultant.
Property owners are asking the town to allow heavy industry on 24 parcels covering about 100 acres along Old Northport Road. The land, occupied by construction firms, sand-mine companies and other businesses, is zoned for a mix of light industry, service industries and houses.
The planning board held a June 6 public hearing on one of two proposals associated with the rezoning effort. It ran for 2 1/2 hours before it was adjourned for completion in September; resumption of the hearing has been postponed twice since then.
A hearing on the second proposal also had been scheduled for June 6 but never was started because of the length of the first hearing. It, too, has been postponed twice since September.
