Adoption fees at the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter will be waived on St. Patrick’s Day for town residents who want to adopt a pet.

This is the first year the shelter is hosting the event, called “Lucky You, Lucky Me,” according to a news release. It will be held on March 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shelter is at 3320 Beltagh Ave. in Wantagh.

Cats and dogs adopted during the event also will receive free spaying or neutering, rabies vaccinations and microchipping, the release said. Adopted cats will be tested for feline AIDS and leukemia as well.

The event will also feature a raffle to benefit the shelter’s “Tails of Hope Fund,” which helps fund surgeries and other costs for sick animals, the release said.
