The town will provide supplies to volunteers, officials said.

“We work with Boy Scouts and other volunteers to mark storm drains,” town spokesman Mike Deery said.

Hempstead has 17,000 acres of wetlands and 180 miles of coastal waterways, Supervisor Kate Murray said in a statement.

“Only rainwater should run into our storm drains, and these ‘No Dumping’ medallions will remind residents of the importance of helping to keep town waterways clean and pristine,” Murray’s statement said.

Residents interested in participating in the program can visit http://www.toh.li/conservation-and-waterways or call 516-431-9200. An instructional video that explains how to attach the medallions to storm drains is available at www.TOH.li.
