Hempstead Town seeks tax volunteers for seniors

Hempstead Town’s Department of Senior Enrichment is seeking volunteers to help senior citizens file their annual income tax returns.

The volunteers will help run the free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. VITA is offered in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service. No experience is required because volunteers would be trained, town officials said.

Weekday training will be held between Jan. 9 and 27 at 200 N. Franklin St. in Hempstead. Saturday training will be held Jan. 7, 14, 21 and 28 at the Lakeview Public Library (1120 Woodfield Rd., Rockville Centre).

Volunteers will be required to work a minimum of three daytime hours per week during February, March and April, and will be on hand at Hempstead Town senior centers and local libraries leading up to the April 17 filing deadline, officials said.

For more information, call the Department of Senior Enrichment at 516-485-8100.
